Why Bother?

In the old days, Japanese bike made big power but had spindly, heavy steel frames, weak brakes and poor suspension. They basically went like stink but handled like pigs on roller skates and didn't stop very well. Spondon, along with other frame manufacturers, offered bespoke solutions to these problems that enable these powerful engines to be used to their full potential. They offered a vastly superior handling bike that could be fitted with state of the art brakes and suspension, all developed in racing environments, which is where Spondon started.

Nowadays things are a bit different, the Japanese and European manufacturers have got their act together and now produce fantastic handling, fast machines. It is barely possible to improve on these machines but the modern 'Special-framed Motorcycle' owner has a different outlook, they don't want a bike that is the same as everyone else's, they want something that stands out from the crowd. Because of this, there is still great demand for all things Spondon and there is not two bikes that are identical, each has it's own identity.

Unfortunately, Spondon became mixed up in the whole Garner/ Norton debacle and are no longer trading, however GIA Engineering, run by ex-Spondon man Gav Goddard, are carrying on the mantel and are staffed by some ex-Spondon employees. They are producing some fantastic creations in the Spondon tradition and the future for 'Special' bikes looks rosy.
